I AM RETIRED. DURING MY WORKING CAREER I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MACHINE TOOL ENGINEERING FOR A MACHINE TOOL BUILDER. MY COMMENTS REFLECT THIS BACKGROUND.The machine as offered by Bolton has very limited functionality as a milling machine.
1: No details are offered as to milling space dimensions.
2: It would seem that a riser block is needed to bring any work piece close to the spindle nose.
3: Milling Spindle size is not provided. I think it is 1MT. Where does anyone buy 1 MT tooling in the US?
4: The compound slide and tool post would need to be removed for drilling/milling functions. When this is done there is no dial for Y dimension movement of the saddle. The saddle would now provide Y axis movement.
5: Are the feed screws in inch or metric configuration?
For everyones information, Many Asian machine builders use Metric feed screws. If metric dials are used and the user is aware, measuring for inch machining is not too complicated. However, it is common for builders to cheat a little and use metric feed screws but substitute dials that give inch indications. This works for part of one screw revolution but cumulative errors come into play the more the respective dial is rotated. This is nothing new, European machine builders did the same thing many years ago. It's just frustrating when one is trying to do anything with any degree of precision.
6: A riser block pushes the workpiece well above the machine bed. As the work moves along the X axis (across the lathe bed) support for the over height work is lost and machining accuracy is lost & vibration sets in. Makes for realy poor work surface finish too.
7: Is there a Micro down feed for the spindle? It looks like there might be one but no information is provided. Without it, verticle milling adjustment becomes very difficult without a measuring system.
This link provides some more info (but not much) about the machine and its builder.[...]
Or just Google AT 125.
What else? Well I wanted to buy the machine for my hobby work. But I don't see it
as a wise choice for milling operations.
Perhaps someone else has first hand experience with this particular model?
