Grizzly G4000 9" x 19" Bench Lathe Review

Grizzly G4000 9 x 19 Bench Lathe

I purchased this lathe about 1 1/2 years ago. The motor went on it about 3 months ago (with very light use - like once per month). Grizzly has still not been able to give me the parts I need, and my experience with customer service has been pathetic. For example, they shipped a motor, but not the other parts that were needed. So I've had a $150 motor in my workshop for 2+ months, which is starting to rust by the way. And the parts I need are not supposed to be in by "the end of the month" - the same story as last month. So now I'm looking at basically throwing a $1000 purchase (including stand) in the trash. Unbelievable....

Grizzly G0516 Combo Lathe w/ Milling Attachment Review

Grizzly G0516 Combo Lathe w/ Milling Attachment

(More customer reviews)
Almost 40 years ago it was my job to write a technical description of a small Chinese lathe that my employer wanted to offer for sale. I was impressed with the technical skill and workmanship of that first Chinese machine tool offered in North America.
Now I am the owner of a shiny new Chinese combo lathe / mill from Grizzly.
My new machine arrived with much more than was advertised. It has a quick change lathe spindle nose instead of the far more common bolt on style chuck mount.
Included with the lathe was a 3 jaw & 4 jaw chuck plus a face plate whereas most of the similar small lathes offered today come with one bolt on 3 jaw chuck. To round out the chucks there was also a face plate!
When I dug a bit deeper into the lathe accessories I also found a quick change tool post. The tool carriers are grooved for boring bars too.
Although this is a small hobby lathe the tool system can accommodate 1/2" square tools.
When I setup the mill I found it was equipped with a quick change Colet set and a milling vice too!
Does this machine have any down sides? Yes. Are they major? Well, not exactly.
The G0516 is not a geared head lathe. It requires shifting the V belt for spindle speed changes. The new belt is really tight and hard to shift from one groove to the next. Back gearing is by a cogged belt, no gear changes on the spindle.
Feed changes and thread cutting requires mounting different gears. Some of the gear changes provide a bit of a challenge. Thread cutting to a shoulder requires skill and patience (there is no thread dial or spindle brake).
From the very first lathes with automatic feeds/ thread cutting, fitting of the shaft support has been a challenge for the machine fitters. My machine is no exception, the shaft support is misaligned. Winding the carriage to the far right causes the feed screw to bind in the half nut base.
The milling head and column are well made and run well. Removing the installed drill chuck required the application of brute force. Seems this is not unusual, someone else wailed about the problem of removing the drill chuck in another forum. Anyone wishing to precision bore a deep hole would be wise to carry out a careful perpendicular alignment of the milling column. My machine has no indication of any alignment checks by the builder and there is no accuracy certificate with the machine.
Overall I am pleased with the design and craftsmanship of this hobby machine.
I feel it is well worth the modest cost.
One word of caution. This is a heavy piece of equipment. It requires care and forethought before attempting to move it from the solid wood crate to a final resting place. It also needs to be bolted down, albeit the maker has neglected to provide bolt down dimensions!. I used a chain hoist , wood wedges and a counter balance cable between the hoist chain and the end of the lathe bed to keep things on a even keel while hoisting.
I know I will have many hours of pleasure from my new toy!

This is my second lathe. I am told that all of the small Chinese lathes are basically the same. I picked the Cummins because (1) I could pick it up locally and (2) it come with a bunch of extras (like rests, a jacobs-style drill chuck, face plate, etc., it is big enough to do some jobs I enjoy. The machine is no Leblond, but hey, its a pretty accurate and very capable little machine that turns beautiful finishes and has plenty of support backup through Little Machine Shop. If you want to try your hand at a bit of machining but do not have room or money for a bigger machine, you might consider this lathe.

I was looking for a benchtop lathe with a little more grunt and capability than the smaller, hobby-type machines, and without spending a ton of money. The lathe arrived well crated and covered with preservative. Plan on using up a roll of paper towels getting this stuff off. Once mounted on my workbench, I checked the spindle for runout with a coax indicator and also checked the tailstock alignment. Both were on the money. I obtained a live center, drill chuck, and a set of tool holders locally, and was off and running. First project was a steering tube for an outboard motor, that required a 12" length of aluminum stock to be turned to 7/8" OD and a 14-TPI thread cut. Both operations went extrememly well. Vibration is very low and this machine is solid.
Some gripes: When cutting threads coarser than 14 TPI, the end gearing arrangement prevents the access cover from being closed. This I see as a potential safety issue. I would like to see a power cross feed added, even if it added to the cost of the machine. Finally, I would like to see the inside of the tailstock taper keyed for the drill-chuck arbor.
All said, this is a lot of lathe for the money. I see from other reviews that some people aren't happy, but my experience has been positive so far. I've done this stuff for a living on a $20,000 toolroom lathe and this little JET does many things just as well. It is a small machine with limited power, but should serve most home machinists very well when used within its limitations.

I was undecided on this machine or the Grizzly machine. When I called Grizzly they were never available to talk with me about this machine. I called this company and they are always willing to help. I'm glad I went with Bolton Tools, they have a great price and the quality is the same as the Grizzly lathe. I know because I have a good friend that owns the Grizzly model. I have been machining for 10 + years and was truly impressed by this machine considering what it costs. I had the pleasure of being able to pick it up and the team at Bolton were professional, courteous and provided an overall great experience.
This machine is so solid I am converting it to CNC immediately!
It is very similar to the Grizzly G9729 model and some Shop Fox machines I have used but has more features then other machines in this class and boasts tight tolerances. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
I was shocked as to how far my money went - I got more than I expected! This proves that sometimes you don't have to pay more to get more.
Everything is VERY solid and what one would expect from a precision machine. The fact you can run the mill and lathe at the same time is a real plus!
This is a truly professional quality machine at a hobbyist price!

Yes, folks, I bought this thing, and now when I use my smaller face mills, I'm stuck securing them in with an old pair of scissors rather than a proper hex wrench. Why? The retaining bolt isn't metric. I mean, for the love of god, why not make all hex heads metric? It's not like you have to worry about 400 years of backwards compatibility like with screws and bolts. Anyway, point being that if you have a cheap Chinese milling machine (like me) and order this product, be prepared to have to go down to Home Depot and buy another set of Allen wrenches.

Grizzly G3358 Mill / Drill Review

Grizzly G3358 Mill / Drill

(More customer reviews)
There isn't enough space to tell of the problems I've had with this machine. It epitomizes the stereotypical image of junk machinery built in the China of yesterday. I've seen lots of decent equipment come out of China in the last few years, but it seems that Grizzly has bypassed those manufacturers in favor of saving a few bucks. If you are going to be machining anything other than plastics, aluminum and other soft materials, don't waste your money. With anything heavier than 1/8" steel it's nothing more than a glorified drill press. And don't even think about using a boring head. The headstock and quill move so much under even a .050 cut as to be on the verge of dangerous. I've had to:
A. Rework the lead screw nuts. They are poorly cast bronze with a very clumsy system of adjusting backlash. Basically the nut is split with a saw and a cap screw is used to squeeze the threads together.
B. Spent several hours getting the quill so that an R8 collet could be inserted. The interior of the quill was not finished properly and the pins for the slots in the collets were set too long.
C. The motor will not start when cold without a lot of coaxing. They sent me another motor, but I could not get the pulley off of the original motor so I'm waiting for another pulley before I can see if a motor switch solves the problem. I'm just praying they send the keyway key as I requested. Obviously, being unable to remove the old pulley, I don't have the old keyway key.
D. The manual downfeed crank has a spot that binds on every revolution of the crank. I'm betting it's a poorly formed worm gear.
E. Not directly related to the mill, but the set of R8 collets I purchased with the mill had a collet that was marked as 1/2" but in fact was a 7/16" collet. Grizzly couldn't just exchange the single collet, they had to send me a complete set, charging my credit card. Several weeks after they had received the defective kit and determined that I indeed knew how to measure a collet size, they refunded the purchase price of the replacement collet set. But it took several emails and a phone call to get my return shipping costs reimbursed.
F. And on the matter of spare parts, except for the collet set, of the 1/2 dozen or so parts I've had to order for this machine, NOT ONE was correct in the first shipment.
Add a DRO for some accuracy and you might get some service out of this machine in soft materials. But if you are going to do more than drill 1/2" holes in steel, don't waste your time.

I AM RETIRED. DURING MY WORKING CAREER I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MACHINE TOOL ENGINEERING FOR A MACHINE TOOL BUILDER. MY COMMENTS REFLECT THIS BACKGROUND.The machine as offered by Bolton has very limited functionality as a milling machine.
1: No details are offered as to milling space dimensions.
2: It would seem that a riser block is needed to bring any work piece close to the spindle nose.
3: Milling Spindle size is not provided. I think it is 1MT. Where does anyone buy 1 MT tooling in the US?
4: The compound slide and tool post would need to be removed for drilling/milling functions. When this is done there is no dial for Y dimension movement of the saddle. The saddle would now provide Y axis movement.
5: Are the feed screws in inch or metric configuration?
For everyones information, Many Asian machine builders use Metric feed screws. If metric dials are used and the user is aware, measuring for inch machining is not too complicated. However, it is common for builders to cheat a little and use metric feed screws but substitute dials that give inch indications. This works for part of one screw revolution but cumulative errors come into play the more the respective dial is rotated. This is nothing new, European machine builders did the same thing many years ago. It's just frustrating when one is trying to do anything with any degree of precision.
6: A riser block pushes the workpiece well above the machine bed. As the work moves along the X axis (across the lathe bed) support for the over height work is lost and machining accuracy is lost & vibration sets in. Makes for realy poor work surface finish too.
7: Is there a Micro down feed for the spindle? It looks like there might be one but no information is provided. Without it, verticle milling adjustment becomes very difficult without a measuring system.
This link provides some more info (but not much) about the machine and its builder.[...]
Or just Google AT 125.
What else? Well I wanted to buy the machine for my hobby work. But I don't see it
as a wise choice for milling operations.
Perhaps someone else has first hand experience with this particular model?

I use it mainly for milling aluminum parts for 1:12 to 1:8 RC models. For this size of parts it works perfectly, I used both the 3 and 4 mm milling cutters and could take away 2 mm out of the full material with no problems. Probably even more material can be milled at once.
Despite the misleading description everything on the machine is metric (millimeters) which I consider a big plus.
It also works as an excellent drill stand. It runs very smooth and at really low noise.
The only reason why I didn't rate it with 5 stars: the compound table was delivered with excessive clearance on all parts. It is not difficult to adjust, but for example their micro compound table was delivered perfectly adjusted.
To make use of the machine you need at least order a step clamp set, milling cutters and also the machine vise is highly recommended. The machine vise (Proxxon 24255) is delivered with cap screws which are too long to fit on the compound table. I had to buy socket cap screws M6 x 16 mm.

The micro milling machine FF 230 is a small, accurate milling system used to mill, drill and countersink steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass and plastic. The headstock swivels through 360°, indicated on a scale. Height is adjusted via a zero adjustable hand wheel, also used as fine feed when milling. One revolution equals 1/32" travel, 1 division equals .002". The quill and headstock may be locked in position, which is essential when milling. The powerful permanent magnet motor drives via a poly-v-belt, yielding high torques, especially at lower speeds. The machine comes with three collets of 15/64" - 5/16" and 25/64". The solid table has a size of 10 5/8" x 3 5/32" and is T-slotted to 15/32" x 15/64" x 13/64". Important: For best results when milling, it is recommended to lock the headstock. Proxxon 37110 Micro Mill MF 70
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a very thorough research before ordering the MF70 mill, and was impressed by the precision everyone said it has. The only complaint people gave against it was its small size and therefore limited range of use. But the price compared to other "micro mills" was also much less, so it seemed like a fair trade off. When I received mine I thought it was a bad one (previously used or tampered with) because the z-axis hand wheel had a full 1/4 turn of play. I wrote the US distributor of Proxxon and they replied that this phenomenon is common to this mill but not a problem as the machinist can work around it. The mill's description on Amazon and elsewhere clearly says there is no play in any of the axes. I interpreted this as meaning there was no play that the user could feel (since there has to be some in order for it to be able to move). 1/4 turn is quite far from that. People do use this and have good experience with it, so I don't know what the explanation is. I don't want a mill with that much play. So I have returned it and am going to spend a good deal more and get either the Sherline or Taig mill.
