The Wilton 13402 vise is a precision tool, well built. The jaws have a step machined into each half to hold your work parallel with the table. The cam holds the work tight and the slide is fitted well. If you need a high quality vise for your drill press / milling machine, don't hesitate to lay out the coin for this one, you won't be disappointed.

Spindle Motor for Zen Toolworks CNC Machine Kit, with Tool Holders Review

Spindle Motor for Zen Toolworks CNC Machine Kit, with Tool Holders
Average Reviews:

This motor is very quiet, as advertised, but at 7000 RPM it is slower than may be expected
I picked up a black and decker rotary tool for 25$ and its lowest setting was approximately 12000 RPM while also being quite quiet (the higher settings would cause the bit to get hot quickly, scorch the wood and get quite noisy).
Also keep in mind that this motor does not include a power supply, one more thing you'll have to buy separately. Though these can be picked up for cheap, I was using a replacement printer power supply.
This spindle package is nice because it comes with mounts, hardware and a bit was thrown in with mine, however a power supply would have been nice.

CarveWright N01 Woodworking System Review

CarveWright N01 Woodworking System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the sears craftsman version of the carvewright machine (compucarve) for almost a year now. It's identical to the carvewright except for come cosmetic differences. Early versions of both machines had numerous manufacturing problems.
The sensor that detects whether the door is open would fail in the open position making the machine stop working.
There was also a problem with the board sensor failing from time to time. The machine detects distance from the board by shining an IR light, then reading the intensity of the light bouncing back. When the sensor works, it works great. Some people reported the sensor filling up with sawdust. While others just failed for no reason.
I had both of these problems. Other people reported a problem with the flex shaft overheating. Mine didn't have this problem.
When mine failed, I sent it back to them for a series of standard fixes designed to correct my problems and prevent the other common ones. The machine has worked fine ever since.
I believe if you were to buy one of these today, you'd get a better version with all the bugs worked out.
Pros:
The software is great. You can download a demo version from their website before buying. I'm an IT consultant so I understand completely what goes into good software. And this is top-tier work. There's definitely a learning curve for the software, so be prepared to spend some time with it. This is true of any powerful software system though, so no bad marks there. There's a lot of good tutorials out there as well.
It's not just for making relief carvings. You can create a tool path that enables it to cut out complicated shapes. It won't replace a scroll saw for fretwork, but it can come close. It's great for cutting out jig parts or knobs from wood.
It can cut plastic. And that includes relief carvings.
The quick-release collet for the router bits is great. You most likely will need the included tool to get them out though.
You can get this sensor attachment that goes in place of the router bit. It moves back and forth scanning a 3D image into the software. This allows you to copy existing carvings.
Even though they're a small company, their customer service was good. All their customer service agents were in texas, not india. And they were all very knowledgeable about the machine. There aren't many people working there. This means you can easily get on a first name basis with the customer service people. But sometimes they're not available. So you may lose a day or two getting the right people on the phone.
You can buy it at amazon now. (yea!) I had to buy mine from sears. (yuk)
Cons:
It's a bit slow. But considering what it does, I can't complain much. There's three quality settings. And on the highest setting it can take 45 minutes or more to carve a 8"x10" face. They claim they've run them for 6 hours straight on complicated carvings with no trouble at all. I believe it. Think of this machine as something you start, then leave while you do other things.
It's loud. But it's a router. So again, I shouldn't complain.
Because of temperature limitations, I can't really keep it in my garage where the rest of the shop is. It gets too cold and I'm worried about how well it will operate in that environment. I keep mine in the basement next to a shop vac.
Dust collection isn't so great. But there's not a huge amount of dust. But you do have to vacuum it out after every run, which is not hard since the machine really opens up.
It only carves up to 1" deep. I wish it were more. But it's not a huge problem.
It can be really difficult to import a picture of someone's face into the software and make it look right on the carving. This is probably a problem with the user though. :-)
Their sales literature claims that you can rip, crosscut, and miter with it. But make no mistake, you won't be replacing your table and miter saw with this machine. It's really only good for occasionally cutting off a board after carving.
I wish the software included a more extensive carving library. Some are included with the software. But you'll quickly find yourself looking for other things to carve.
It's a bit plasticy.
And lastly, it's expensive. For what you pay for this machine, you can get some other really nice machines for the general shop, all made of steel and cast iron, and all of which will be around for my grand kids. Sometimes I get the feeling that this will be obsolete soon just like computers. But we spend this much or more on computers these days so I guess it's fair. It really does do a lot for the price. And it's a lot cheaper than the alternatives.

You've Got Big Ideas. CarveWright Has the Technology to Make Them Happen. Revolutionize your handicraft experience with the CarveWright computer-controlled carving system. Now you can design and create your own furniture, architectural flourishes, signs, and almost anything else you can imagine -- all with the precision and flair of a professional.Whether you're routing, carving, cutting, or jointing, this exceptional machine can produce original masterpieces right in your very own workshop.
Just Think of it as Desktop Publishing for Wood and Other Soft Materials The CarveWright woodworking system is as easy as 1-2-3. First, simply design your project with the included CarveWright designer software. Next, upload your project to the memory card, but don't limit yourself; the included card is capable of holding several projects at once. Finally, insert the memory card into the woodcarving machine -- and the easy-to-follow LCD will guide you through the rest.
The Software Thanks to CarveWright’s intuitive, straightforward software package, you don't need to be a master craftsman to make customized creations. The point-and-click interface is super simple to navigate, but surprisingly powerful. With this software, you can arrange, combine, and even alter elements from the existing 3D image library with the tap of a mouse -- or import your own images into the library for a unique and custom product. Images can then be "dragged and dropped" onto the workpiece display, where it's easy to combine images, add text, change size and re-shape, or adjust the carving depth.
With CarveWright design software, you can contour the surface of your workpiece by trimming it into domes or arcs, or applying a variety of textures. You can even draw out your own design using the integrated 2D drawing capabilities. The 2D elements operate much like CAD software, letting you create and then apply constraints to lines and curves. And if you're interested in making signs, you're in luck -- because this software has extensive text capabilities. Raster text for a bold 3D effect, outline it for emphasis, or quickly carve text with a V-bit for an engraved look. The software uses the true type fonts which are already available on your computer, so unique, one-of-a-kind signs are a snap.
The CarveWright design software is both PC and Mac compatible, and it operates without ever requiring your computer to be hooked up to the CarveWright woodcarving machine. You can click here to see a demonstration of CarveWright software, and watch the system in action.
The Machine The CarveWright Woodcarving Machine measures a mere 15 by 18 by 26 inches so it's compact and easy to store, but it's loaded with the power and convenience features of an entire workshop. The rising-head and feed-through configuration accepts workpieces up to 14-1/2 inches wide and 5 inches high -- and with proper support, it will process stock of nearly any desired length.
The onboard computer makes this machine amazingly quick and trouble-free to use. Just load the designs you've saved onto the memory card, and the LCD screen will walk you through the set-up. Now you're ready to create complex carvings, signs, reliefs for mantles and cabinetry, or friezes and furniture. The machine will automatically choose the correct bit for your job and measure your workpiece; and the patented Quick Change System makes removing and replacing the bits perfectly painless.
The machine features a vacuum impeller built-in as well as an external vacuum port that fits a 2-1/4-inch OD hose. This vacuum system maintains airflow through the machine and removes airborne dust that can build up on the sensors, but it is not designed to remove all of the generated chips and dust. Most of the dust generated by the CarveWright remains confined within the machine and will not affect the machine performance. After every project, simply vacuum or treat the area with compressed air.
Like a printer, projects can be configured to run in a draft mode (low quality), normal quality, or best quality depending on the situation. The quality mode dictates the speed of the cut and amount of material removed per pass. On the best quality setting, the spacing between passes is .006-inch.
This advanced machine works well in most soft materials including wood -- even exotic hardwoods. The machine will also cut some foams, and suitable plastics, including polycarbonate or cast acrylic. With this machine, the sky's the limit. If you can dream it up, the CarveWright can bring it to life.Click here to see some fun examples of products from CarveWright workshops around the country.

The macine is a great idea but is JUNK. Have had the machine since October 2010, it has less than 70 hours on it and it has been down for over 4 weeks. Even though I have maticuously maintained it and added a dust collection system to it that isn't even offered by Carvewright and is a necessity, it is not reliable and falls out of setting easily. The software is full of glitches and bad programming. Customer service at LHR, for the most part,is a joke. I wish I had purchased the Rockler unit instead. Now I'm out over $2500 with all of the accessories and a machine that does not work. I should have believed all of the other negative reviews I read before buying. Amazon should stop offering it!

I've been waiting over a month for this item and Amazon is repeatedly delaying my shipment date. The latest email from Amazon states that I won't see the machine for still another month!!! I would order this profiler machine from someone else if you need it in a timley manner. Amazon should update the product listing to represent the expected actual shipping time. This order delay has cost me much more in lost work than what I saved ordering the item through Amazon.

JET JMD-18 350018 230-Volt 1 Phase Milling/Drilling Machine

Jet machines are quite functional.
A milling machine is the heart of a machine shop.
If this is your first milling machine, expect to
spend and equal amount on the tooling you will need
to make it work. A clamping kit, an assortment of end mills
chucks and holders, a vice, a rotary table, an indexing head
and more will all be required to round out the purchase.
Horesepower translates into speed of material removal.
Bigger bits require greater power.
This is just a starter mill and you will want to upgrade
to something costing ten or twenty times as much when you
want to do production work as this one is all hand cranked
and requires a skilled operator to run it.
Did I mention that it cuts wood etc.? There are even machinable
ceramics which it can handle.
Again, expect to double the price (as a ballpark est.) on any
machine tool by the time it you are done. And plan to put it on
a solid foundation, not in your livingroom.
I use mine (a Jet VMM626) to make thermoplastic injection molds.

Proxxon 34108 Micro Mill FF 230 Review

Proxxon 34108 Micro Mill FF 230
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use it mainly for milling aluminum parts for 1:12 to 1:8 RC models. For this size of parts it works perfectly, I used both the 3 and 4 mm milling cutters and could take away 2 mm out of the full material with no problems. Probably even more material can be milled at once.
Despite the misleading description everything on the machine is metric (millimeters) which I consider a big plus.
It also works as an excellent drill stand. It runs very smooth and at really low noise.
The only reason why I didn't rate it with 5 stars: the compound table was delivered with excessive clearance on all parts. It is not difficult to adjust, but for example their micro compound table was delivered perfectly adjusted.
To make use of the machine you need at least order a step clamp set, milling cutters and also the machine vise is highly recommended. The machine vise (Proxxon 24255) is delivered with cap screws which are too long to fit on the compound table. I had to buy socket cap screws M6 x 16 mm.

Zen Toolworks CNC Carving Machine DIY Kit 7x7 Review

Zen Toolworks CNC Carving Machine DIY Kit 7x7
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Zen Toolworks DIY CNC Machine Review:
Short reviews are great but I decided that mine should be a bit longer and in depth so anyone who reads it will have a better idea of what exactly a Zen Toolwork CNC Kit is. In short It is a GREAT item. If you want a short review see below.
Short Review: A Must have. One of the Best Investments I have ever made as far as tools go. Buy it!!!
Long Review:
A MUST HAVE for anyone who wants to get started with CNC with an excellent well made precise and affordable machine. If you want to design prototypes, carve foam, plastic metal or wood (this machine is perfect for doing wood engraving as it has a fantastic detail level even when down to extremely small designs with the right bits) or even if you just want to make small custom and/or precision parts on occasion for models or RC vehicles; or perhaps just do a little custom engraving once in a while this machine is more then able to handle the task without emptying your wallet. And it's a Kit! So you get to have a great time building it!
Arrival: From the time it shipped to the time it was at my door was 2 days. I live in NJ and the CNC kit came from CA so that was very fast shipping!!!
Upon opening the box I found everything very well packed, very tight and secure. I did a parts count and everything is where it should be with a few extra screws, bolts and washers.
Parts:
The material that makes up the body of the machine is very strong. Much stronger then I would have initially though. The box must have weighted in at over 40 pounds, as the body material is very heavy and sturdy. Anything that was not made of the gray body material (such as the driver screws or the rails) was steel or stainless steel.
Quality: All parts except the motors are brand new. However in the description it does say that the motors are used. Considering that the Stepper motors are probably the most expensive part of a CNC machine this is where the real savings are as the motors while used are very well made and appear to have a lot of life left in them. I don't think I will be burning out any of these 3 motors any time soon. So everything came as described or better. For the price paid the quality can not be beat and surpasses what most people would expect for a CNC machine priced well under $1200 even under $300 as Amazon has them listed at an absurdly low $299.95. As far as CNC machines go less then $300 is near free when you compare it to others of the same size. This machines ability appears to on par and in many cases better then the "cheap" desktop models others are selling for $1100 on up. After building it and seeing what can be done I can say that this is one of the best deals out there for any type of CNC machine or tools. All moving parts have multiple ball bearings so nothing is dragging. Even after reading all the positive reviews I was still pleasantly surprised at the sturdy design and well made parts.
Ease of Assembly: All you really need is a cheap Walmart $1 Hex Key set, a small vise, a Phillips screwdriver, a power screwdriver (saves a lot of time but not really needed) and some common sense. Total tool cost for what is needed to assemble this kit if you don't have any tools at all (everyone has screw drivers right?) would be less then $30 and that is with a cheap power driver or about $10 to $15 without the power driver. The tough part is getting the small side of the driving screws to fit the ball bearings as it is a tight fit and they need to be pressed into the bearing. I found it easiest to get the driving screws into the bearings first as I do not have a drill press handy (a cheap $40 one from Sears could do it) and then use a small vise to gently press the edges of the bearings into the body parts. If you have access to any kind of drill press this can be done really easy using the press to put the driving screw into the bearing after it is in the body. It took me about 4 ½ hours to assemble and I had to back up a few steps because I forgot to check the alignment of a few holes (this means I put a few panels on backwards because I was not paying attention) and had to disassemble a few steps back to reposition a few of the body parts about 3 or 4 times. That was my fault however. The only customization that needs to be made is a mount for your cutting tool. I have a dremel tool so fabricating something was easy enough. Even a quick fix however would be fine because once attached you can use the machine to make a better mount. I will say I had a great time just building this machine. I am already tempted to order another one just to build it. Maybe I can talk a few friends into buying them and letting me do the assembly. Everything was easy and well made and fit where it was suppose to fit. When you read the online instructions for assembly it says that you should take your time and it does not have to all be built in one day but once you start you just get into it and have such a good time that you really want to finish it all at once. This was a 0% frustration build and very fun.

You will still need to buy a power supply and driver card but they can be found cheap online. You will have to make your own interface cables for the driver to talk to the motors but it only takes about 10 min a cable (You will need 3) if you want to wrap it nice and make sure it is all insulated. This is the one area you don't want to be cheap on price or time about (I spent about an hour doing cables and about $10 for wires, tape and connectors at Radio Shack. Get the color variety pack. It helps to color code). If you cross a line you could fry out your board or your stepper motor so make sure everything is separated nicely and insulated well. Most importantly make sure you have a male/female Printer cable! I did the whole build, wires and all; and at 1:30am I was looking forward to a dry run with just a sharpie to check out the level of details that can be done and to make sure everything was working correctly after building the unit and getting all excited about running it when I realized I had no printer cable. Plus it was snowing so badly that everything was going to be closed the next day so I had to wait a few days to get one. These are all over EBay if you just type "CNC Cable" in the search so if you don't have one you can get one shipped for less then $10 if you look online. If you have any mom and pop computer shops nearby they may have one there if you look and odds are it will be free or only be a few dollars as the cables are not used much and just take up space. Everything went together really easily. Electronics as well.
Size: This is a desktop CNC Machine so it is small enough not to be in the way, about the size of a large desktop laser business printer or about 1 ½ times the size of a desktop printer/scanner/copier and 2 times as high; which is great if you do not have a lot of room. I currently have mine sitting on a rolling laptop table and it takes up about 60% of it. 100% with the card and power supply but that is because I have it mounted to a Plexiglass base as I am in the process of building a housing for the electronics) Do not let the size fool you however. The work area sounds small on paper but once it is built there is more working room then initially thought. There are many things that can be fabricated with a machine this size that would surprise you. If you check out Youtube there are some good postings of some of the basic things this machine can do as well as a great video of a detail engraving on an aluminum block. While Zen Toolworks appears to be a young company and this CNC machine is still a fairly new product, I expect to see a lot more of these videos soon as it is the least expensive machine you can buy and one of the best investments anyone can make for their shop. This desktop CNC Machine is just big enough to make almost anything you could want a small 3 axis CNC machine to make in the work area AND the worktable is raised enough so that a larger then 7x7 item could be fabricated and/or engraved in sections without the frame getting in the way. It is small enough to be out of the way if you have a small shop or even an apartment with limited working space.Level of Detail: The first thing I did once I got the machine built was to use a small metal bar and attached it as a mount with some screws to hold it in place and some zip ties for a pen so I could do a test run on a sheet of paper. I used Mach3 and jogged the unit manually to see how accurate it is. Jogging produced a good level of detail but the small amount of time that it takes to tap a button doesn't allow for a real test of the machines detail levels as you can not get really fine levels just manually jogging the machine. So the next thing I did was to use Mach3's Lazy Cam feature and just typed out my Fiancés name, picked a font and did a drag and drop. It took about 5 min to do the 8 letter name. I had the machine set for a fairly small font with the lettering outlined so it was a hollow letter which is why it took that long to make. The font size on paper would be similar to a #10 font size if you were to use a printer. Just using a cheap pen and only being held in place with zip ties I was able to produce an extremely accurate and very fine level of detail. No misses, skips or miss alignments. It doesn't sound like much but considering the small size and type of font once you see it done it is very impressive. To get an idea find a hollow text font and in size 10 print out a name. This machine did that with a pen and with a much thinner line going point by point without missing a beat. Let's say that after that I was very impressed. Not only was it perfectly drawn the round parts of the path where actually round and not just short lines. Next I found a...Read more›

JET JHM-610 Hobby Mill Review

I ordered this hobby mill to do small projects at home. I have had over 8 years of cnc machining experience. First of all I got the package in a damaged up box from UPS. Next there was not much information on putting this mill/drill together but did manage to get it going. Once I got it going was o.k. on brass and aluminum if you only remove .005 or less at a time. Any time I would switch to steel the collet would fall out even removing .001 at a time. Noticed right away that the micro adjustment gears would not catch. looked inside and found broken metal pieces of what was the gears that the mico-adjust locked into. By the time I messed with just the basic features it was almost 30 days later since purchase. I contacted Jet and they bounced me around to different call centers to finally a guy with 30 years of Jet equipment experience. He did not have any idea about how the machine operated and was surprised this machine did not have a draw bar for milling operations. He said the only option was to drive 70 miles to the nearest repair shop and have them fix what ever was broken. When I contacted the shop they told me they don't know what kind of machine I had and also told me it would take over 2 weeks before any repairs could be attempted. With all this frustration on a $579 machine I decided to contact Amazon.com to see what my options were. They offered me a full refund with prepaid shipping back. All I had to do was make a new crate and drop off at local UPS pickup. The only people that deserve 5 stars is Amazon.com. Their quick handling of a bad situation for me was very welcome. I will continue to shop with them.

4" Cross Slide Drill Press Vise Metal Milling Machine Review

Those of you complaining about the quality of the product are probably not happy with anything ever. You need to consider that you cant even buy a standard bench vise for 30 dollars let alone a vise with an x and y axis movement. Those of you with realistic expectations will be thoroughly satisfied. Those of you who want professional machinist quality results will need to shell out 100 dollars or more. You get what you pay for. I am totally happy with the vise because I had 30 dollar expectations for a 30 dollar product.
