Grizzly G3358 Mill / Drill Review

There isn't enough space to tell of the problems I've had with this machine. It epitomizes the stereotypical image of junk machinery built in the China of yesterday. I've seen lots of decent equipment come out of China in the last few years, but it seems that Grizzly has bypassed those manufacturers in favor of saving a few bucks. If you are going to be machining anything other than plastics, aluminum and other soft materials, don't waste your money. With anything heavier than 1/8" steel it's nothing more than a glorified drill press. And don't even think about using a boring head. The headstock and quill move so much under even a .050 cut as to be on the verge of dangerous. I've had to:
A. Rework the lead screw nuts. They are poorly cast bronze with a very clumsy system of adjusting backlash. Basically the nut is split with a saw and a cap screw is used to squeeze the threads together.
B. Spent several hours getting the quill so that an R8 collet could be inserted. The interior of the quill was not finished properly and the pins for the slots in the collets were set too long.
C. The motor will not start when cold without a lot of coaxing. They sent me another motor, but I could not get the pulley off of the original motor so I'm waiting for another pulley before I can see if a motor switch solves the problem. I'm just praying they send the keyway key as I requested. Obviously, being unable to remove the old pulley, I don't have the old keyway key.
D. The manual downfeed crank has a spot that binds on every revolution of the crank. I'm betting it's a poorly formed worm gear.
E. Not directly related to the mill, but the set of R8 collets I purchased with the mill had a collet that was marked as 1/2" but in fact was a 7/16" collet. Grizzly couldn't just exchange the single collet, they had to send me a complete set, charging my credit card. Several weeks after they had received the defective kit and determined that I indeed knew how to measure a collet size, they refunded the purchase price of the replacement collet set. But it took several emails and a phone call to get my return shipping costs reimbursed.
F. And on the matter of spare parts, except for the collet set, of the 1/2 dozen or so parts I've had to order for this machine, NOT ONE was correct in the first shipment.
Add a DRO for some accuracy and you might get some service out of this machine in soft materials. But if you are going to do more than drill 1/2" holes in steel, don't waste your time.

Jet machines are quite functional.
A milling machine is the heart of a machine shop.
If this is your first milling machine, expect to
spend and equal amount on the tooling you will need
to make it work. A clamping kit, an assortment of end mills
chucks and holders, a vice, a rotary table, an indexing head
and more will all be required to round out the purchase.
Horesepower translates into speed of material removal.
Bigger bits require greater power.
This is just a starter mill and you will want to upgrade
to something costing ten or twenty times as much when you
want to do production work as this one is all hand cranked
and requires a skilled operator to run it.
Did I mention that it cuts wood etc.? There are even machinable
ceramics which it can handle.
Again, expect to double the price (as a ballpark est.) on any
machine tool by the time it you are done. And plan to put it on
a solid foundation, not in your livingroom.
I use mine (a Jet VMM626) to make thermoplastic injection molds.

Powered by a UL-listed motor, this high-performance tool has a drilling capacity of 1-1/4 inch and a 15-7/8-inch swing. It also boasts a three-inch face mill capacity, a 3/4-inch end mill capacity, and a host of innovative features, like an easy-to-read internal depth gauge and a worklamp.
Extra-Large Work Table for Bigger JobsThanks to its extra large, 9.5 x 31.75-inch worktable, the JMD-18 gives you the freedom to tackle larger scale projects that require more space and flexibility. And the included worklamp provides ample illumination of any size work piece, even in dim conditions.
2 HP Motor and Hinged Belt Cover for Power and Fast ResultsThe JMD-18 operates with a powerful UL-listed, 2 HP, one phase, 230-volt motor that gives the tool a range of 12 spindle speeds from 15 to 3,000 RPM. The JMD-18 is backed by a two year warranty.
About JET: A History of Sharing New, Feature-Rich ProductsOpened in 1958 after the founder of the company, Leslie P. Sussman, took the first Boeing Jet Airplane trip from Seattle, Washington to Japan, JET began as a small dealer that sold air hoists and trolleys out of a single hardware store in Seattle. Over the years, JET has carried everything from snowmobiles, transmitter radios, and forklifts to nylon stockings, but by the early 1970s, metalworking had become the base of their business line. And by the 1980s, JET had expanded into the realm of woodworking. Today, you'll find that JET offers a wide range of popular woodworking tools that are backed with best-in-class features and excellent service.

Grizzly G8689 Mini Milling Machine Review

As noted by a previous reviewer, this same model (all made by Sieg in China) are available from a variety of sources. I purchased mine from Grizzly, largely because of the support that Grizzly provides. If I were to purchase this same milling machine again, I would probably go with Micro-Mark which is about the same price. The big difference is that the Grizzly version uses 0.060"/turn on the x and y axis and 0.0625"/turn on the Z-axis, while the Micro-Mark uses 0.050"/turn on all axis. It's a lot easier to dial in, say a 0.384 movement at 0.050"/turn than it is to divide 0.0625 into 0.384 to determine the number of full turns and the add'l thousands needed to hit 0.384 exactly.
Anyone considering a small milling machine probably knows that you'll spend nearly as much on tooling as the initial purchase price of the mill. With this mill, plan on additional purchases of a belt drive kit ($120)to replace the noisey, failure prone gear train and an air spring kit ($40)to replace the cheesey torsion spring mechanism. Without the air spring kit, the mill head will occasionally drop 50 thou or so, resulting in an undesired gouge in your work piece. Both kits are available from LittleMachineShop.com (an Amazon supplier).
Provided that you don't push it too hard, this little guy will handle machining of small steel, brass, aluminum, delrin, etc. work pieces with accuracy of +/- a few thou. To do that, however, plan on investing a considerable amount of time on tuning the machine by polishing and adjusting the gibbs and tweaking the nuts on the lead screws to minimize backlash. Besides improving the performance of the machine, this tuning will improve your understanding of how all the pieces fit together to perform the milling function.
