Dremel 212 Moto-tool Drill Press Stand # Review

I purchased one of these to make my dremel into a drill press for wood - mostly softwood and it has been a terrible experience. The collars that attach the tool do not allow for perfect square alignment and the dremel many times cant seat a bit so there is no wobble. I was disappointed with this tool. I found that MicroMark makes a small hobby drill press (as well as other great tools) that is sturdy, reliable and excellent. It maycost more then the dremel but you do get what you pay for.

Palmgren 11351 AVC35 Angle Vise, 3.5-Inch (4-Inch) Review

Palmgren 11351 AVC35 Angle Vise, 3.5-Inch (4-Inch)

I purchased this item through Amazon to go with my milling machine and expected an American made product. Instead Palmgren has gone to China and I got an inferior Chinese manufactured vise with a stamped Palmgren nameplate. Vice was dirty and painted a sooty gray, not the American green as shown in picture. Machining and castings were not up to US standards. Two year warranty instead of lifetime for US manufactured vise. In short, disappointed. Amazon needs to properly represent what it sells.

Proxxon 38481 IB/E Professional Rotary Tool Review

Proxxon 38481 IB/E Professional Rotary Tool

I bought the Proxxon instead of the Dremel. The Proxxon is very quiet compared to the Dremel which is screaming loud at high RPM. The Proxxon appears to be extremely rigidly built unlike the Dremel. It weights about a pound and has about the dimensions of the 300 Series Dremel. You can change the speed from 5k to 20k RPM and the motor is wave controlled to maintain its speed under load - unlike the Dremel which slows down under load. It comes with a set of drills and milling bits as well as cutting wheels. I also bought the drill stand MB 140/S and vice MS 4. The bits appear to be well priced. Notice that Amazon sells many of the bits in kits (as noted in the product descriptions) while most other places sell just a single package of the bits. Dremel bits should fit as well but I did not try this. I am intending to use it for regular repair jobs around the house. The only bad thing I noticed is that the case does not keep things in place when you carry it and you better put the bits in a little baggy instead of the included bit holder. I bought the Proxxon because this unit is regularly used for industrial applications over many hundred of hours while many people reported that they fried several Dremel units at simple jobs like cutting into dry wall.
A small rotary tools is extremely versatile and you can do a lot of things with it like drilling, grinding, sanding, polishing, milling, cutting (sawing), engraving, or routing in many materials like ferrous metals, precious metals, stone, glass, plastic, or wood. There is a bit for every material and job. Most bit kits are useless as they include a lot of cheap tools such as sanding disks. Buy the right bit for the right application. You do not need many different bits. Cheap bits wear out immidiately and are a waste of money. You do not have to buy Proxxon bits - you can use any bits with fits the collier sizes and works with the rotation speed but Proxxon bits are reasonably priced and are of very high precision and quality.

Dremel PL400 XPR Planer Attachment Review

Dremel PL400 XPR Planer Attachment
Average Reviews:

Makes reasonably quick work of trimming a door edge that rubs, but doing a neat job takes some practice. Heavy touch up sanding will be required.
This Dremel attachment is like every other Dremel attachment I have been suckered into buying, it is clearly designed by bean counters. It works just good enough that I would feel bad about throwing it out. For $20, it is a nice tool to have, but I would gladly pay more for one that had a better guide and did a neater job.
A couple specific gripes:
1. The 1/64th depth isn't off by a bit, it is off by a factor of 4. It planes nearly a 1/16th off per pass. I'm still trying to figure out how they came up with the 1/64th number.
2. The guide is useless, it is up to the user to attempt to keep the tool flat on the surface. This takes some practice and will result in some gouges and uneven planed surfaces that need to be smoothed off with sanding.

The new Dremel XPR planer attachment shaves approximately 1/64 inch at a time so you can control the amount of material being removed. The 2 1/4-inch cutting surface is ideal for woodworking projects, and the hardened high-speed cutter has been tested to over 500 linear feet. This great tool is designed to perform planing tasks on sticking doors, picture frames, woodworking projects, hardwood flooring, laminate countertops and much more. The long-lasting, precision-ground blade slices at speeds up to 35,000 rpm to produce a smooth surface that's free of milling marks.

Dremel 565 Multi Purpose Cutting Kit 565D Review

Dremel 565 Multi Purpose Cutting Kit 565D
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this specifically for cutting holes in drywall for electrical boxes, but I have since found that it has many uses beyond that.
What I have found:
- As someone else has stated, the depth gauge is a little inaccurate. You will have to sight the depth for this (which is best anyway.)
- Made of quality materials. You've come across that cheap plastic before; this is not that stuff. This has taken a few drops, so far.
- The drywall bits seem to wear out quicker than I planned on. I have only cut 10 holes for electrical outlets and it seems to take longer to cut each time I use it. The first hole I cut went fast and smooth; whereas the last one that I just cut took three times as long, and twice as much pressure.
- The bit will tend to 'walk' if you don't have firm control over it. (I know, I know, this seems obvious, but maybe not to everyone.) Use of a guide or fence should help control the outcome of your results.
- Does NOT tear drywall. Smooth cuts on both sides -- smoother than my Greenlee drywall/keyhole saw.
- You'll need to use the mini-chuck with the guide. The bigger chuck won't allow the guide to screw down. (I think everyone got one with their main Dremel unit, but I'm not sure.)
- Holding a vacuum hose or air nozzle to one side of the guide will greatly increase your sight. This thing kicks up some serious dust, and unless the light is good, the line you're following may be difficult to see.
I highly recommend this product for those finish cuts on drywall where a saw just won't leave the edges smooth. If you plan on cutting more than 20 holes in drywall, I'd pick up another bit or two.

The drywall bits allow you to quickly cut drywall for electrical boxes, air vents and other wall features. It's best to use drywall bits in a clockwise direction. The multipurpose cutting bit prepares an area for light fixtures and ceiling fans and makes cut-outs in cabinets, paneling and fiberglass. Includes: a cutting guide attachment; two drywall cutting bits; and one multipurpose bit.

This is the Dremel accressory that I've been looking for. A great little metal cut-off wheel. Sturdy, cuts through small nuts and bolts, and does not seem to break. It fits in tight places, and is perfect for the handyman with demo. problems. It is not going to cut through rebar, but most Dremel users already know that. Forget those little waffer disc's. The quick change mandrel is a bonus!!

Proxxon 24260 Precision Machine Vise for MF 70 Review

Proxxon 24260 Precision Machine Vise for MF 70
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This solid steel machine vise is one of the best made and can be one of the handiest machine vises for any mini or micro mill, as well as an insert vise for larger vertical mills. I have used one for over 6 years and have been more than satisfied with it for more than 6 years. I just ordered two more. The original one was made in Germany and came in a very nice wooden box. I hope they are still made in Germany.
Until recently, I have basically used it for drilling on my drill press, because the hold down slots using M6x1 hex headed screws and using a 10mm open end wrench is very arkward. I recently drilled a couple of 1/4 inch holes right above the screw position trough the bottom jaw surface of the vise and used 10-32 socket headed set screws. The steel is not hardened and any high speed steel drill bit will work. This allows me to use 10-32 square nuts with my Proxxon MF70 mill, standard T-nuts with my Taig Micro-Mill, standard T-nuts with my Sherline mill, any T-nut supplied by A2Z-CNC with any other mini or micro mill. This vise, with my modification, handily and easily mounts on my Sherline 4 inch rotary table.
I have gone through many imported vises of the so called "screwless variety" and still often use the Sherline #3551 model. The precision machined right angle parallel sides allows for easy squaring onto the mill table, just like ant precision screwless machinist vise. While it might not be as good at preventing "movable jaw rise" as the screwless type, with my modification, the Proxxon is a real pleasure to use and it provides faster clamping and unclamping of parts for low volume production.
Update: September 9, 2010.
Yes, this vise is still made in Germany and comes in a slide top box. With custom "T" slot nuts, a have found this vise to nbe one of my favorites. I now own three of them. I so small ot production of specialty items and tooling. This has to be one of my favorites. It's worth evey cent. You get what you pay for - precision German Made product that is second to none.
